The Machine...

Just a quick post to show you all what I'm up to. This is actually the first pillbox of the new line's collection (it's gonna be launched this fall) and I totally felt that I had to post it. It took approximately 3.5 hours to make, from making the buckram frame to the finishings (yeah, that was quite a while). So opinions are totally welcome. Obviously the piece would look a gazillion times better properly styled a la "Upper East Side", but my beloved mannequin will have to do until the official photoshoot.Are pillbox hats something you'd totally rock this fall?

Hi everyone. As of late, I've been avoiding blogging and anything online to be honest. I feel alright now, that's why I'm dropping a few lines. Have been dead busy with the new line and haven't had much time to sit and write at all.
Life's been running pretty quickly, and loads of ideas have been hitting me. Besides the line, I want to write a new blog; this new one will be a breath of fresh air, something totally new that I haven't seen much in the fashion blogosphere (won't tell you cuz it's a secret still). But I promise it will be interesting. I won't include the content in this blog because, it just won't go good together. =D

Floating away like the red balloon...

The semester is lets say, basically over. I believe this summer will actually be filled with a lot of new things. I'll be launching my hat/headdress line sometime this August - September; so I'm busy as a bee working now. I'm planning on launching also a second blog on fashion advice and street style. Also, it will be a couple of months of hard cash saving since I have a few things to save cash up for: a trip to NYC, some french lessons and some patternmaking lessons. I'm seriously thinking of taking next semester off from school, since, I know that if I still take class I'll probably won't be able to work hard enough with the new line. I believe it should have my full attention. But, right now that's just a thought. On the iTunes is the soundtrack for Le Ballon Rouge, beautiful French film you all should check out and that inspired this post.

This is just a gorgeous shoot I discovered on this month's Elle magazine. I usually don't buy random magazines off my nearest Walgreen's shelf but this one was yelling out my name. *buy me Sophie buy me!*

I believe this has been one of the most gorgeous editorials so far. I fall endlessly in love with black and white photography every single time -there is just something so magical about it.
Amanda looks so gorgeously innocent yet she kinda reminds me of that grandma that everyone's afraid of and that has a gazillion animals in her backyard.

the hot chocolate...

Thursday morning before class, a friend and I shared hot chocolate while talking about life, death and the future. I figured something out that morning. Life and our Existence is more or less like that hot chocolate I was drawing on a sketch pad - and sipping. While it was recently poured it simmered warmly, steam readily pushing it's way to the atmosphere, trying to get there first or just trying to get there; where it needed to escape to.

Life is more or less this. There's this warmth, this fire burning in us that pushes us to where we need to be, and we spend our lives trying to reach where we need to escape to.
Yeah, all of this from a cup of hot chocolate.

How to Dress Nautical - Fashion 101

Everyone loves it. It's completely French inspired and everyone wants to be French (well at least I do, lol).

Now, not everyone knows how to pull this style off and rock it well.

Here's a little guide on how to make this trend yours:

1) Red, White & Blue - these are the principal colors. You can mix and match with gold or silver to give accent.
2) Stripes - you must have stripes. Either the top or your bottom must have some horizontal babes to bring the look to life.
3) Really sweet flats or make-a-statement heels are necessary. Flats do great for a day out walking comfortably, heels are for the party girl.
4) A bow, floppy hat or seashell accessory does great to complete the look.
5) Anything that reminds you of a day at the beach.

Days in the Sun...

It's seriously never anything else than Sunny here in Puerto Rico. Only the occasional rain storm and such but the weather is always pretty much the same.
Fashion in these parts consists of anything you don't sweat like crazy in, so sweaters & coats are out of the question even in the coolest times of the year.
But at least we get to have fun in the sun all year long!

Where the wind blows...

It's been some time since I could decently sit and just write my heart out. It even feels a tad strange, but it's good to be back and able to share things with you all. I know I'm super behind on comments and all that have been visiting well; thanks for stopping by and hanging around.

These couple of months have been just so stressful. I had to take up a part time job because, even though the Etsy shop is doing cool, it's not enough to take it to the next level. So, I'm saving up to start a real website and to pay for new material and advertisement. Also, trying to save up to get my own place to be able to work and just have some space and privacy.

School has been going quite fine, though I miss the liberty of having extra time to hang around with my friends. Seriously, I miss being able to just be around them.
I'll really try to blog more often and well maybe even give more sneak-peeks to the designs I'm working on and such. =)

Rock Hard...

Munching on Skittles right now, trying to figure out my next move. I honestly am confused about what should come next. The Etsy shop has outgrown itself. I want to expand. Maybe have a serious website (in designer world, having an Etsy shop isn't very glamorous and you're not taken seriously). Don't know if I should have a line under my own name - Sofia Touassa, or if I should give FunnyPeopleCo full attention and keep the name.

I just feel that when I look at my designs, they don't yell FunnyPeopleCo or Etsy. I think they are asking to be taken more seriously, I think.

Also, I'm totally lost when it comes to how to get fashion buyers, shops, etc. interested.

Le sigh... it's hard to manage a one girl business.

Any thoughts??

The Light Seeps Through...

Have you ever laid underneath a tree and looked up to just admire how the light seeps through the branches?
I tend to believe nature sometimes gives us hints of why things happen or how the outcome will be like. Like right now; tree branches become obstacles, horrid barriers that get in the way. However the sunlight, powerful and bright, runs around every leaf, every branch to find a little opening to make a breakthrough and create a wonderful masterpiece out of nothing.

Terrified in the Middle of the Night...

In the middle of the night and scared out of my mind, well everyone here at home is. They tried breaking in. This is definitely the scariest experience we have gone through so far. My sister and I were in our room and suddenly hear heavy footsteps right behind our bedroom, they jump into the terrace (where my dog Andy stays) and Andy attacks him - or her, we really can't be sure - and it was frightened. You could hear the running and a mess of footsteps and heavy breaths and someone jumping down the staircase.

If you Want to Sing out, sing out...

There are times in life that scream out for a change, maybe a change in mindset, a change of pace, even a change of songs on your iPod.
I think the beauty of being human is that inherent need to transform oneself and reinvent from scratch and just improve what we feel needs to be.
This is what will be happening with this blog. It will be changing, for the best I promise.
I just don't want this to be another blog out there, I don't want an overflow of pics for posts, I want to speak out and share things with substance.
I sincerely am not like other bloggers out there, that all they care about is views and comments. I just want readers to like what I write and for it to touch them in some way.
So for a change, I'm not going to follow trends going on with other fashion bloggers. I'll post outfit posts if I want to, or street style or whatever feels right because I want to. It's that lately I've been feeling that that is all fashion bloggers care about, outfits and such. There is such a huge world beneath fashion; history, art so many topics and it just seems that if you blog about anything else, no one will care. Well, I feel that I don't want to fall into what everyone wants to read/see, I want to be true to myself and to the reason of why I started blogging in the first place.

See my Name in Shining Lights...

I know this is the time of year that everyone is working hard on their resolutions and trying to stick to them. I sincerely don't have any. I have the thought that if you want to stop doing something or start; any time is perfect and you don't need a new year to kick in.

I'd say, instead of resolutions, I've got a few goals I want to accomplish. Maybe I won't complete them this year, but it really doesn't matter how long I take. It's actually quite a nice list and I've decided to post it. =)

1. I want to be famous. Ok, not Lady Gaga famous. I just want to be good at what I do and have people like what I do and be inspired by it; whether it's with fashion or music. It's just the mere appreciation, that sort of "fame"

2. I want to goof off more often. I think artists are quirky in their own way and that "goofiness" comes in the package; however I'm a person that takes herself too seriously sometimes.

3. I want to move out. Yup, the girl needs a bigger space for the accessories studio and an even larger space for her musical endeavors.

4. I want to start designing clothes and maybe start a line. This one's kinda hard I know, but I'm starting with sewing and pattern making lessons this month and I have a few computer/web savvy friends that can build the site to start selling. =)

5. I want to smile more. People say I'm always smiling and laughing but really, I don't think that's true. I think I let bad things that happen take over me so easily and they just stick for so long.

A Rainy Day and some Jazz...

Today was exactly like this, a very rainy day and some Jazz to spice it up. I think rainy days always bring me good luck; or at least they calm me down enough.
Finals for Voice Class were today and I'm incredibly happy I passed mine. Seriously it was an incredible experience; performing Autumn Leaves and Les Mis' On my Own for 6 voice professors.
Honestly, I have never cried when singing any piece and while singing On my Own, I just felt my eyes fill with tears; and just like my bestie said : it was a life defining moment; this is something I want to do for the rest of my days - besides the designing, obviously.

Just resuming my day in pictures:

Floral Print of the dress I wore today and my fave locket that I had with me, though no one noticed because I was wearing a scarf over it. My "On my Own" music sheet, the view from my car window at a traffic light, and my beloved umbrella.

The Sun's Lover

Even though it is "winter", here in Puerto Rico the weather is warm enough to run around in summer clothes -total bummer.
The sun is incredibly warm and friendly, it's quite incredible that we are in mid December!

Took these pics at my bf's mum's house; they've got a pretty big yard and adorable kittens to photograph. Speedy -the kitty - has always loved me taking pics of it and somewhat poses for every shot. Also was trying out my new tripod but pictures didn't turn out that well, I need some practice!

So deep down someplace in the confines of my little musical soul, I am a rocker.

Yes, I might enjoy indie pop or even some random electrika, but it's the headbanging and the guitars and meaningful lyrics what makes my heart skip a beat or two.

Decided to give you all a double dose of bands during this Musical Mondays post. Two bands that although are in the same "rock" genre, are two worlds apart and are usually on repeat on my itunes.

Fashion Sketches 101

I got to say I'm not really good with fashion sketching. Most of my designs just come to life in a different way, by playing with fabrics, modeling them and cutting/sewing into place.

But I'm going to share with you all this one sketch I did last Wednesday while waiting for my voice class and I'll kinda explain what I did along the way.

Isn't there a moment where you find yourself taking pictures of your shoes out of boredom? I think I tend to do this a whole lot.

I am definitely a flats girl; because of my back condition I'm not allowed to wear heels so 99.9% of my shoes are flat. I really believe the flat shoe area must be improved, I mean, stylish people also wear flats and not all of them can wear heels, am I right?

If your shoes were human, what would they look like??
I think mine would probably look like Kurt Cobain with a rhinestone denim jacket, lol!

Sincerely, I'm getting to the point in life where I just feel I need some space of my own. To get home and run around in cute pink pj's with slippers, sipping some Sleepytime tea and watch Breakfast at Tiffany's without anyone around me, have cute, pink decor all over the place and a closet full of just my things would be a dream, really -I share a room/closet with my sis, in case you were wondering.

Not that don't enjoy being with my family and people around me, it's just that I want/need to feel how it feels to just be by myself, to depend on only myself, to be on my own.
However, until then, I'm gonna stare at these pics for a while.

We one day just felt like taking out our vintage film Praktica & Pentax cameras, our 10+ film rolls and head out deep into the mazes of Old San Juan.

Crimson Love...

Only a few weeks left of class... trying to finish homework and decide if I should withdraw from my music theory class since I truly am not going that well in it and do not wish to fail and ruin my GPA. Today I guess I'll be getting some orders from the shop done and finishing some designs and practicing for voice class later on. Yup, it's a busy Sunday.

Things I'm loving of this weeks so far:
1. Tea sipping with toast early in the morning while blogging.
2. My sweet "new" saddle shoes that I plan to use with EVERY Christmas outfit this season.
3. Nylon Mag that I got yesterday.
4. Red nail polish, it's this week's color I'm afraid.
5. My iphone's ipod in full blast with cool tunes.

Stuff I'm hating so far:
1. Having to decide to leave a class.
2. The noise a neighbor is doing with some pressure cleaning machine.
3. Not liking what stores are offering this Winter Season.

This year has been a complete roller-coaster of feelings, experiences and everything else in between. I, for one, am not the type of person that gives "thanks" to whatever makes this universe go round for everything she gets/happens on one day a year. I don't really enclose "giving thanks" to a deity or anything either, anyone that takes a part in my life gets a share of it - the thanks I mean.

But just to follow tradition for fun I'll write down a little list of things I just give thanks for today.
Sophie's list of thank yous:
3. having great people to share life with, being them family, friends or mere passer-bys.
2. being able to live a dream, even if it's hard to manage things and keep up.
1. The pumpkin pie we'll be having later on. I luv pumpkin pie

Pumpkin Pie Recipe!

Ingredients

1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
1 (14 ounce) can Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Whisk pumpkin, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, spices and salt in medium bowl until smooth. Pour into crust. Bake 15 minutes.
Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F and continue baking 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted 1 inch from crust comes out clean. Cool. Garnish as desired. Store leftovers covered in refrigerator.

FUCK THE SIZE!!!

This post may sound more like a rant to the clothing companies and please don't get me wrong, I love having representation of our lovely fellow fashion bloggers and them getting involved in collaborations with clothing stores out there desperately trying to reach and convince the public with this new type of advertising but PLEASE GET BLOGGERS THAT ARE REALISTIC -not already models or dead skinny girls that look like models!!! Most of us fashion bloggers are OF ALL SIZES!!! Petite, Tall, pear-shaped, bootylicious; you have a variety to choose from!

This is not a rule for Indie sites and shops only (which are doing a great job featuring girls of all sizes) but big companies should also think about considering this also.

We want a world where every girl feels happy with the body nature gave her, not to create this utopia where are girls are created with the same size 0 measurements; and I thought fashion blogging was a safe haven. The blogosphere was that untouched place, now I even read posts like "I want to be as skinny as ______ blogger". And this is sad. The fashion industry's perfect body portrait is infiltrating our system. And it should be stopped because, whatever healthy girl we have left could soon be lost.

I say FUCK THE SIZE.

I don't want to be here any longer. If it weren't because I don't have the cash to move out, I'd be long gone. Anywhere but here...

I want to be in a place, city, town that challenges me; where I wake up in the morning, look out my window and all I see is a display of art; a masterpiece.

I can't find that here, I feel this place drains the energy out of me; art, fashion, music here are not appreciated. If you are someone perusing any of those careers, you will not go anywhere here. You'll just dwell in frustration, you'll feel like your hands are tied and you have no place to go to.

Anywhere but here...
Preferably NYC.

I'm Boycotting Forever 21

I am just so disappointed! I don't know what to do! I went to Forever 21 as usual - you guys know how big of a fan I am (or was) - and was looking around and I suddenly bump into a headband in the accessory section THAT IS JUST LIKE ONE I DESIGNED AND HAS BEEN SELLING AT MY SHOP FOR MORE THAN A YEAR!!!!!

MY HEADBAND:

FOREVER21'S:

Truly I cannot believe a multinational corporation with designers of their own can actually copy EXACTLY a headband designed by other smaller designers, that is just so cheap!!! It's the exact same cut, the exact same size of bow, the exact same adornment in the middle, everything!!! It's an exact clone!!! Yes, I am annoyed. Imagine if someone steals your homework and presents it to a class and everyone praises her for the incredible work done? You'd feel the same way I do.

And worst of all, I can't do much except vent on this blog since I would need tons of a cash and a lawyer to sew these people for stealing my work.
Until I figure out what I can do, I'm never ever shopping at Forever21 again,
if they stole my designs so bluntly, they could have copied any other small designer's work and it's something that shouldn't be allowed.

I sometimes feel this way with the blogging world. I feel as if this is now just a popularity game; how many comments you can get, how many views do you have, followers, fans...
Where did the real feeling of just expressing oneself went? Where did the just read a blog because you are into what a blogger has to say go to?
I lately don't know how to feel about this big sphere of blogs, but all I know is that it's feeling emptier and emptier.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart are: Peggy Wang - keys + vox, Alex Naidus - bass, Kurt Feldman - drums & Kip Berman - guitar + vox. They're an indie pop band from NYC.

What's their Style?
Total Vintage mix, Peggy seems to adore the 80's/90's with her oversized shirts and lace up boots; they guys are skinny jeans and button up shirts all the way.

What do they sound like?
Noisy pop-ish, cute guitar riffs that kinda remind you of a sunny day in the countryside and calm vocals.

Even though there isn't an H&M store here in Puerto Rico -tho they should consider opening since they are not feeding certain fashionistas with their incredible pieces and we are hungry for that stuff - I'm still uber excited about this line.

Designer Update: Inspiration Seeking for the New Collection

Part of designing is finding that special muse to light your way into creating. I believe my sister has found us a perfect one: Madonna.

While we were trying to come up with a concept for our new Winter Collection, we were listening to Madonna's 80's hits and a light bulb just lit up. Rapidly googling her 1980's outifts we instantly fell in love with her style and her headpieces.

So watch out for a lot of Madonna-ish pieces in this new collection...

Arrived in NYC yesterday and I already hate thinking about Tuesday ( the day I come back home). This place is just a dream come true for someone with an artistic soul...
It is just so different from anywhere else in the world; yes, people here may be cold and they won't small talk back at you but there's something in the air, that just keeps getting you high and you just want more and more of it.

Highlights of the day:
Found my sis's Fashion U sites, ran around Times Square, shopped at F21 (yes the one with like 4 floors!!), froze for a while until I got used to it, walked to Central Park, ended up at the Upper East Side (and yes, everything there looks like an episode of Gossip Girl - the school uniforms are worthy of a season collection), took the subway back to our hotel street and now have sore feet, lolz.

I'm such a horrid blogger -yes, I feel terrible after a few days of not blogging. I've been super busy with the trip and homework and the shop's new collection (that hopefully if I find a photographer I'll be able to launch before I leave) that I haven' had any time for anything!

Hopefully today when I'm done with all my orders I can just sit back and plan my outfits and outings and such.

Ok, so one of my best friends got a hair cut and supposedly he does look like one of the NSYNC guys (according to one of his bros, tho I haven't seen him yet so can't really tell) and just the simple mention of the band made me reminiscence and start digging into my old CD collection to find all these bands and singers I was into in my pathetic teen years. Gosh I remember having my walls COVERED in posters and I would die if I didn't have their CD's the SAME day they were out.
